If it is listed in a search engine, take advantage of it!! For God's sake, why would you ask them to REMOVE something that might send traffice to your site?? Make a great page, name it old-dead-link.html and use it to your advantage!! Interesting idea, if the link mentioned is still on a server you can get to. Just put a bunch of redirects on there to the live page.
The drawback is that you would be misleading the visitor, and you'd NEVER get the site cleaned up/
