Spamming the ALT tags?

How bold can one be in spamming image
ALT tags?

If you sell boats, can it backfire with
the search engines to name a bullet or
arrow "boats"? Do you have to be cagey?

Or, going the other extreme, can you just
spam away, "boats, boats, boats, boats,
boats................"?
