Can Altavista be mastered?

I've read and read and read, then applied ....,It doesn't seem to matter what I do I can't seem to get in the top 10 hits for the gnische I'm after. :-(
Have any of You managed to do so, that is get into the top 10 in your desired nische, an any of the most popular search engines?
