Usually use gifs. Except with images that have tons of colors, like actual photos, then use jpg.

Yes, I know there are many exceptions so don't flame me. I'm just trying to give some general advice.

One of these exceptions.

gifs compress horizontally. So if you had an image for a webpage background that was some sort of left to right color fade it would be smaller as a jpg. Even if there were relatively few colors.
