I make sure a person who has been using scanners for a few years does mine if I go to a store and do it.

Always eyeball for lint and tell the person to wear gloves when handling you pictures. I had one done a few months ago and they ruined my originals and had to take them all over again!
and tell them to clean the glass on the scanner as well.

Otherwise you will be spending hours using adobe editing and cleaning your digital pics.
