I accidentally discovered a hidden jewell in Linux named jpegtran, it makes conversions in jpeg files without losing any picture information. It is not really intended for compression, but I have been using it to remove garbage from my files. Thumbnails generated in photoshop get reduced to a third of their original size.

this does the trick:

jpegtran pic1.jpg -o >pic2.jpg

You can of course generate a batch file.
