The proper way to do this is to use Cascading Style Sheets. However,
because the lack of support for CSS is still fairly large, you can
still use the antiquated style formatting for the headings.

For instance ...

<h1><font size="-1"><i>Level One Heading</i></font></h1>

Just be sure that your tags are nested properly. Not like this ...

<h1><i><font size="-1>Level One Heading</i></font></h1>

See the difference?

The easiest way to create this same effect with CSS would be ...

<h1 style="font-style: italic; font-size: 20pt">L 1 H</h1>

... though I've had more success with ...

<h1 style="font-style: italic; font-weight: lighter">L 1 H</h1>
