Graphics software that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to use.

Can anyone suggest some options for good graphics software to make a website look unique? I would like something to make sets and gifs, and maybe some animated gifs and banners. I have MGI Photo Suite Le but it doesn't do that much. I have Adobe Photo Deluxe whish came with my digital camera too, but that is also limited. At least I haven't seen much. Ease of use is important too.
