Yeh, but they're not getting all that much smarter. This is the artificial intelligence crowd at work. Structure an ecommerce site's searches on these notions, and the company will soon be in the red. AltaVista's latest weirdness is predictable from the business pages of U.S. media. All significant management changes at search engines soon result in new ranking protocols, whether needed or not.
