Rumor: Don't repeat words in your description meta tags more than 2-3 times; it can get you banned.
Rumor: Don't put hidden (same-color-as-background) text on your pages. It can get you banned.
Rumor: Don't use multiple domain names or multiple file names for the same pages. It can get you banned.
Truth:
Here is what I have learned by studying one website that breaks every rule that I know about.
