As far as I know, spiders worth their salt DO see 1x1 pixel gif links and transparent text. If you client wants to get other pages indexed (and do it honestly,) try creating a robot.txt file on your root directory instead. Spiders are already programmed to look for this file and know what to do with it.
If that doesn't do it for you, use simple text links to the other pages- this helps spiders and graphically impaired users navigate the site.
