Yes, I believe they do get read by at least some of the search engines.

One important purpose served by the alt tag is that a certain percentage of your site visitors will be cruising the Web with images turned off. The ALT tage is used to display text in place of the image in such cases.

From my web stats, it appears that between 5 and 10 percent of my visitors have the image turned off. I get a large percentage of visitors from places like E. Europe (slow modems, phone lines, per inute connect charges).

I use the ALT tag to provide a basic identification of the photo with an indication of file size (for example: ALT="Diana Ziliute - 30 KB").
