What are the functions of Keyword and Keyphrases?

Example:
1. <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="mine, stock, software">
2. <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="mine stock software">
Let say I want those who search for key phrase "mine stock
software" to find my site on the top of first page.
In the first keyword meta tag I used three seperate keywords. The
second meta tag I used one keyphrase.
What are the different effects these two version would cause to
the search result for "mine stock software"?
Which version will give me a better ranking for "mine stock software"?
