You ask a lot of questions. I will try to answer them all.

>Can I design a website that contain a lot of the keywords that I want people to find me with and still get ranked high just by content and repetiton of the word?

Most definately you can. You need to make a site that has a lot
of relevant content to the keywords you seek to rank under. Each
page should have 250 words of content.

>What about links? Do they still help get ranked in search engines?

Links are still a major part of ranking. The links need to be
from a site on a related topic. FFA links are useless and you
can be penalized for them.

>Is the content on the first page still very important?

Content on each page is important. Each page should have a lot
of valuable content. Make the page worthwhile to the visitor.

>Is there anyway to hide metatags?

No you cannot hide the meta tags. Meta tag keywords are not all
they are cracked up to be. Your Title tag and meta description
tag are very important. Don't fret too much over the meta
keywords.

>Would more pages with more content help?

More pages are always good if there is content. If they are just
fill pages or doorway pages, then they are useless.

The best way to get good placement in the search engines is as
follows:

Good Title
Good Description
Good Content (250 words per page)
Good Inbound Links
Good Listings in Yahoo and ODP
