Iestyn, I've been pondering the same problem. Seems to me there are two ways around this. Assuming, and somebody (read, JIM) please disabuse me of this assumption if I am wrong, that the only way they have of doing this is rejecting the META Refresh tag. The following two methods, if rejected by the engines, would reject an inordinately high number of "legitimate" pages:

1. Use the javascript "window.write" function "onload" to rewrite the gateway page with your destination code. All code outside the javascript tags would be optimized for search engine placement.

2. Use a frame gateway page, like this:

<html>

<head>
<title>Gateway Page</title>
</head>

<frameset framespacing="0" border="false" frameborder="0" rows="100%,*">
<frame name="top" src="http://www.mydomain.com" scrolling="yes" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">
<frame name="bottom" src="http://www.mydomain.com/empy.htm" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0"
marginheight="0" noresize target="left">

<noframes>
<body>
Everything here is optimized for search engine placement
</body>
</noframes>
</frameset>
</html>

Of course, what this does not address, is whether the <noframes> stuff gets indexed by the search engines satisfactorily. Anybody want to clue me in?
