Search Engine Headache

I am new to web site promotion on the web and am wondering if anyone out there could help.

When i register with a search engine do i have to have a domain name or can i register with a url like.. blahblah.freeserve.co.uk ?

And what is a spider?

If anyone could shed any light.. i would be hugely gratefull
